Good Adhesion Begins Before the Adhesive Is Applied
A successful hair system attachment depends on more than the adhesive itself.
The condition of the surface receiving the adhesive matters just as much.
Before applying a liquid hair system adhesive, the scalp should generally be clean, healthy, free of significant residue, and completely dry. Oils, perspiration, moisture, remnants of adhesive remover, skin-care products, and other contaminants can interfere with the contact between an adhesive and the skin.
But there is an equally important consideration:
More cleaning is not necessarily better cleaning.
Aggressive scrubbing, repeated use of harsh products, or attaching to already irritated skin may compromise the very surface we are trying to prepare.
Good scalp preparation therefore has two objectives:
Create a clean bonding surface while protecting the health and integrity of the skin.
The Science: Adhesives Need Contact
Pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) work by establishing close contact with the surface to which they are applied.
Unlike an adhesive that requires a separate chemical reaction to initiate bonding (a two-part epoxy for example), a PSA is formulated to flow sufficiently under pressure to conform to microscopic irregularities in a surface.
This process is commonly called wet-out.
Wet-out does not mean that the surface is literally wet.
It describes the adhesive's ability to spread across and establish intimate contact with the surface.
The greater the effective contact between the adhesive and a suitable surface, the greater the opportunity for intermolecular forces to contribute to adhesion.
This is why surface preparation matters.
Adhesive manufacturers routinely emphasize that contaminants on a bonding surface can interfere with wet-out and reduce effective adhesive contact. The same general principle applies when the substrate happens to be human skin.
Your Scalp Is Not a Piece of Plastic
This distinction is extremely important.
In industrial adhesive applications, a technician might prepare a metal or plastic surface using strong solvents, abrasion, primers, or other aggressive treatments.
Human skin obviously requires a different approach.
Skin is a living, continuously changing surface. It produces oils, releases perspiration, sheds cells, contains moisture, and maintains a protective outer barrier.
That means scalp preparation is always a compromise between two objectives:
Preparing the surface for adhesion
and
preserving the skin underneath it.
The goal is not to make the scalp chemically sterile or remove every trace of natural oil from the skin.
The goal is to create a clean, dry, consistent surface that allows the adhesive to perform as intended without unnecessarily stressing the skin.
Sebum: The Scalp's Natural Oil
The skin naturally produces an oily substance called sebum.
Sebum serves useful biological functions, but from an adhesive standpoint it can behave as a surface contaminant.
Instead of allowing the adhesive to contact the skin directly, excessive surface oil can create a thin layer between the adhesive and the scalp.

The adhesive may still appear to stick initially, but the quality and consistency of the interface may be reduced.

Good preparation actually begins with removal.
Do not unnecessarily strip, scrape, or aggressively rub the scalp in an effort to remove every trace of adhesive immediately.
Appropriate adhesive-removal products and sufficient dwell time can make residue easier to remove while reducing unnecessary mechanical stress.
This matters because repeated adhesive application and removal can affect the outer layers of the skin. Medical-adhesive literature emphasizes appropriate product selection and correct application and removal techniques as important elements in preventing adhesive-related skin injury.
A perfectly clean scalp that has been scrubbed until it is irritated is not a properly prepared scalp.
Step 2: Clean Away Oils and Residue
Once the previous adhesive has been removed, clean the attachment area sufficiently to remove:

The appropriate preparation is the least aggressive method that reliably produces a clean bonding surface.
Step 3: Inspect the Skin
Before proceeding, look at the scalp.
This simple step may be one of the most important parts of the entire attachment process.

This is particularly important with water-based liquid adhesives.
“Water-based” describes the adhesive formulation.
It does not mean that the adhesive should be applied over a wet scalp.
Step 5: Use Scalp Preparations Only as Intended
